Institutional case study

The company that fenced Colorado State University

When Colorado State University — one of the largest land-grant universities in the nation — needed chain link fencing installed to their campus standards, they chose Fort Collins Fence as their approved vendor.

That approval doesn't come without scrutiny. Institutional fencing projects require verified insurance, precise installation specs, on-time delivery and a proven track record. We met every requirement — and the fence we installed on the CSU campus still stands today as proof of what properly engineered chain link looks like.

Two types, one standard of installation

We install both galvanized and vinyl-coated chain link to the correct gauge, post spacing and tension spec for every application.

Galvanized chain linkHot-dip zinc-coated galvanized steel wire

The original and most widely used chain link material. Galvanized steel wire is coated in a zinc bath to resist corrosion — ideal for most residential, commercial and industrial applications where cost-efficiency and durability are the priority.

Vinyl-coated chain linkPVC-bonded over galvanized steel core

A galvanized steel core wrapped in a PVC vinyl coating — typically black or green — for enhanced corrosion resistance, a cleaner aesthetic and a softer visual profile. Popular for residential properties, schools, parks and anywhere appearances matter.

Chain link FAQs

Everything you need to know before deciding on chain link — from materials and heights to cost and installation time in Northern Colorado.

What gauges of chain link do you install?

We install 9-gauge and 11-gauge chain link wire — the two most common residential and commercial specs. Heavier gauge (lower number) means thicker, stronger wire. We'll recommend the right gauge based on your application, whether it's a backyard or a commercial perimeter.

What heights are available?

We install chain link from 3 feet (pet enclosures, garden borders) up to 12 feet for commercial and industrial applications. Common residential heights are 4 ft and 6 ft. We'll help you choose the right height for your security and privacy needs.

What's the difference between galvanized and vinyl-coated chain link?

Galvanized chain link is steel wire coated in a zinc bath — the standard, most cost-effective option for most applications. Vinyl-coated chain link has a PVC coating over the galvanized core, available in black or green. The vinyl coating adds extra corrosion protection and a cleaner visual appearance, making it popular for residential and parks applications.

How long does chain link fencing last?

Properly installed galvanized chain link typically lasts 15 to 20 years, and vinyl-coated chain link can last 20 to 30 years or more. Our installations are built to spec so posts are set at the correct depth for Colorado's soil and frost line, which is the most common reason chain link fails prematurely.

Do you install chain link gates?

Yes. We fabricate and install matching single-walk and double-drive gates in galvanized or vinyl-coated chain link. All gates come with commercial-grade hinges, latches and drop rods. We also install cantilever and swing gates for commercial and industrial applications.

Can you handle commercial and institutional projects?

Absolutely. We are an officially approved vendor for Colorado State University and have completed institutional and commercial chain link projects across Northern Colorado. We carry full insurance through Hartford and can meet commercial project specs, timelines and documentation requirements.

What areas do you serve?

We install chain link fencing throughout Northern Colorado — Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor, Wellington, Johnstown and surrounding areas. We do not service Wyoming. Not sure if you're in our area? Call us and we'll confirm.

CSU approved. Locally trusted.
